I first became aware of Jim when I attended the 1980 new years eve Rockets show at Cobo Hall in Detroit. John Cougar was the warm up. I was stunned by Jim's head down (Slash style) solo in the white spot light at the front center very edge of the stage! After that was a very interested fan. Saw the Rockets play at Pine Knob again during that time span also....never heard from him again until one night I stopped into Buster's (no longer there) in Utica on Van Dyke for a beverage and saw big doings all set up on the stage. Asking was told it was the Detroit Blues Band's CD release party. I like the blues so I stuck around to see. I had a prime spot right up front right next to the stool that was soon occupied by Jim! Asking was told it was the Detroit Blues Band's CD release party. I like the blues so I stuck around to see. I had a prime spot right up front right next to the stool that was soon occupied by Jim! I couldn't believe it! Jim played from that stool all night and hit every note right on exactly like the CD. Dance floor was packed. One of the best live music Displays I have ever seen still to this day. Garza was true too! They stopped playing at 2am....What a night! I bought the DBB cd and the next...I have heard Jim play live at the Goose a couple of times and try to catch him when ever I am able. I have been listening to music since the days of AM only available times in the single speaker push button radio's from the early 60's. From then to now Jimmy's sound rings true with a crisp clear steady tone that is truly his own. His rhythm playing alone is worth the price of admission. Thanks for the memories...can't wait to see Jim play again. Play on!

I grew up knowing McCARTY was a "ROCK Guitar God." Vividly remember the final Rockets show, but I had no idea how great he was till I saw him playing the Blues. Jumping on stage, borrowing a guitar, trading licks with other heavyweight players. Amazing! Even a better person!
